Carnivals and Fairs

As the end of summer approaches, carnivals and fairs are on their way. Cotton Candy, lollipops, Ferris Wheels and balloons are all images that come to mind at the thought of a fair.

Most people get a little giddy when arriving at a carnival (even the adults recalling their childhood). Bright lights, lots of colors and the sound of games being played. Prizes are enevitable one way or another, whether it's a huge stuffed animal or some sort of tsotska.

Eating at the fair is always fun. Greasy hot dogs slathered in ketchup, mustard and relish or blue and pink cotton candy adhered to children's moist fingertips, the sugary goodness melting away in their mouths.

Ballons are always my highlight, especially when they are in pastel hues and oh, they are so photogenic.

Overall carnivals are fun and harmless, except perhaps for your stomach which might feel a little funny after all the sugar, food and rides!

Finally, I have been able to get some material for my Friday French Lessons! I have been so busy this summer I am just regrouping!

A fabulous house in France. What's not to love? Beautiful both outside and in with gorgeous hydrangeas in the garden and shelves of beautiful books behind glass in the library! I love the modern twist given to very traditional things. The glass walled dining room addition to the house is just what I mean.

Thakoon's 2010 Fall Ready to Wear collection is a favorite of mine. I think that he did a great job of mixing short dresses with tights and cold-weather items. The greys and whites are elegant while the cut of the clothes are less so. I love the detail on the dresses and the fur around the ankles- transitioning warm to cold. I cannot help but say that I am not impressed with the makeup on the models; pale faces, knotty hair and dark, half-asleep looking eyes never look nice. Anyway, overall I thought this collection to be a great one and that I would share it here.

Wonders of Summer

One weeks left until school begins and I am trying to soak up all the wonderful pleasures of summer. Sun drenched fields and blooming wildflowers, abundant vegetable gardens and bunnies trying to get at them.

During summer I put on whatever is comfortable, perhaps a dress, and don't fuss much about my looks because it's about having fun. You lounge around with a good book because you want to and feel the warm breeze around you.

Summer is about having a good time, relaxing and catching up and taking in all the wonders of the world. In the summer you can embrace your free time and do everything possible or sit back and watch the world go by. I think I enjoy the latter!

The Eclectic Thing

Being eclectic is not necessarily a bad thing. Really there is a fine line between either putting two items together that are mismatched, and making it work or throwing odds and ends together with no care and looking sloppy.

Some people might think that being eclectic means that you are indecisive, that you cannot make up your mind about what you like and don't. I think being electic means that you have a love for many things and you are embracing it all.

There are different ways to 'do' eclective. Either you choose a color palette and focus in on it while choosing items that pull from it, not necessarily caring about if the items go, yet you still like them all. The other way is to choose any items you like; red floral rug, brown antique dresser, yellow modern Panton chair, citrus hued striped curtains and throw it all together because you love each piece for itself and that's the way you like it.

Looking out the windows of my house I see a vibrant green landscape and mountains, fields full of wildflowers, piercing blue sky and wisps of frothy clouds. This set of images is no less than the exact opposite of all that. In these photos you see flat land, gray sky, barren fields and leafless trees. Though not directly stated in each photo I am able to feel the crisp chill in the air and the grayness of it all. The deep-cool blues paired with the biege of the fields and the brown of the twigs is such a calming combination. The idea of fall excites me, a time to get out your sweaters, eat hot food and play in the cornfields. If you are like me, enjoy dreaming about cool weather!

White is an amazing color, well the absence of color actually. Its variations are endless and it goes with any color. If you follow 'the rules' of fashion you know that after Easter you are allowed to wear white so I thought I would post about it. Lately I have been finding that I am drawn to things that are white and when I examined all of my favorite things I realized that most of them are white; dresses, nail polish (strictly for the toes in my case), painted wood floorboards, wicker, hydrangeas, tulips, cardigans etc. I also like the idea of all white bedding with variations of texture and dimension. Taupe Nail Polish

Taupe nail polish is beginning to become very hip. People love it because it can be earthy and neutral or glam. Taupe can be paired with any color pallete, wether its pretty pinks, beiges, teals or greens it will still look amazing. One of my favorite colors isOPI Over the Taupe. This is what Instyle magazine had to say about it: "An amazing works-on-every-skin-tone shade: It gives pale skin a beautifull milkiness- and on darker skin tones, it becomes an elegant, glossy neutral." A brand called RGB makes a lighter, dustier color called Toast, it's beautiful and creamy. Chanel has just come out with a new color named Particuliere. This is apparently Chanel's Spring 2010 runway color, and if Chanel likes it then you know it has to be nice! Please let me know if you know of any other nice taupes! -J

I love color- really vivid, juicy color. That's why I have taken such a liking to the neon trend. Neons can be too wild but they don't have to be. Many associate neon with the '80's but now neon is being used in a whole new way. A bright cocktail ring can jazz up a simple dress or a neon belt can make a sophisticated pair of slacks and blouse fun. Using it in small doses creates the best effect. Painting a small piece of furniture (such as a desk or chair) a bright or neon color can give it new life. Pair with softer cordinating colors or neutrals for a polished feel. If you're afraid of painting a piece of furniture start off with items on your desk such as a hot pink paper organizer. Some of my favorite brights are below. Came across this designer's home on another blog. Margot Austin is currently the editor for Style at Home, a Canadian publication. This is her home in Tweed, Ontario. I like her monochromatic look- the muted hues create a sophisticated feel. The whole house is put together and polished yet very realistic! Oh, and I LOVE that French Bulldog in the fifth photo! -D

Viktor and Rolf is an Amsterdam based fashion house, kown for their eccentric runway fashions and unique flare. It was started by Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren in 1993. Anyway here are a few dresses from their Spring 2010 Ready-To Wear Collection. I thought the dresses were interesting (and maybe a little strange) :)!-J

J.Crew is continually designing fabulous clothes and here are some great examples. They have created a bridge between sophisticated, put-together and fun, carefree looks through their effortlessly stylish clothes. They seem to know which colors will look just right with which type of top, or what kind of beading would create the best effect on a dress. J.Crew is the kind of place where you can go for your everyday tees or you wedding dress (no joke!). I was so excited to see J.Crew's newest collection as well as a photo shoot which was done in La Antigua,Guatemala. Inspired by sepia tones, the straw hats worn by locals and woven pieces the collection is wonderful. I always love their photography, I wonder who does it... enjoy!

I think this photo shoot of Emma Watson by Teen Vogue is exquisite. The location (a sprawling old English country manor ) is amazing as well as the colors and the wardrobe. The jewel tones really appeal to me, especially when shown against old stone or furniture.

Mint & Cream

I have not always liked the color mint green. For awhile I steered clear of what I thought were 'pastel' colors, but then once I realized that mint was much more than that, I loved it! Mint can be soft and soothing or bright and vivid. Mint; a perfect mixture of bright green and teal looks best (in my opinion) with cream or charcoal.
